Athens recognized as World’s Leading Cultural City Destination at World Travel Awards 2023
Athens was recognized as the World’s Leading Cultural City Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2023 for the 2nd consecutive year.
The news was announced during the WTA Grand Final that took place in Dubai earlier in December. Athens was competing with 12 other trendsetting destinations including London, New York, Paris, Rome, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Venice, Kyoto, Barranquilla, Hoi An, Quito, and Santiago de Cali.
Earlier this year, Athens was named Europe’s Leading Cultural City Destination at the World Travel Awards Europe 2023.
Recognition from the WTA celebrates the rich cultural heritage and history of Athens, as well as the unique experiences that are enjoyed by millions of visitors throughout the year. Athens is enhancing and promoting its cultural heritage through the creation of new cultural spaces and a year-long calendar of festivals and events.
In 2023, the City of Athens welcomed the much-anticipated Maria Callas Museum and re-opened the landmark Lycabettus Theater. In addition, the 2nd Athens City Festival organized by the City of Athens brought hundreds of new and classic events to the neighborhoods of Athens with the participation of more than 175,000 residents and visitors.
