The Athenian set-up, light and heritage can work as a unique background for a film production. For this purpose, the City of Athens has launched the Athens Film office, which facilitates production companies to acquire filming permits and assists them with location scouting.
The City of Athens covers an area of 38.96 square kilometres and has a population of 665,000 (2011). It is an extremely attractive destination for film, television and advertising shoots. The majority of Greece’s production studios and audiovisual professionals are based in Athens.
Through the Athens Film Office the City of Athens provides flexible support to audiovisual productions and issues short-term permits, following the submission of an application, allowing public spaces to be occupied for a period of up to a few days for public-benefit, artistic and promotional events, in accordance with the Quality of Life Committee Act 248/15 which covers audiovisual productions.
The Athens Film Office can provide facilities and services to audiovisual productions upon request, and pass requests on to the competent departments to ensure their participation. The Municipality examines and processes the applications within the framework of the current legislation, and ensures that the conditions required for the smooth running of the audiovisual productions and proper use of public space are in place.
*Note: when filming in Athens includes monuments and archaeological sites, a special filming permit is required which is issued by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Service.
To avoid delays, please submit your application at least 30 days in advance.
