City of Athens conducting tourism carrying capacity study to ensure sustainable development
The City of Athens is proceeding with a tourism carrying capacity (TCC) study of Athens’ neighborhoods.
Conducted by ADDMA in collaboration with the University of Piraeus and Planning Consultants Gimisis + Associates, the study aims to define the maximum number of visitors that each Athens neighborhood can host without negatively affecting its natural environment, the local economy, the everyday life of its residents and the overall visitor experience.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas discussed the study’s main objectives with representatives of Athens’ hotels, travel agencies, airlines and short-term rental associations during a meeting which was held on June 18 at the City Hall. Through the tourism carrying capacity study, the mayor argued, the City of Athens aims to create a sustainable city for both its residents and visitors.
According to ADDMA CEO, Ioannis Georgizas, the Agency will contribute to the development of this significant project by providing valuable tourism data.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
