Develop Athens S.A. advances the Sustainable Tourism Observatory as the City’s official Destination Management and Marketing Organization
In a recent decision by the City Council of Athens, Develop Athens S.A., the development agency of the City of Athens, has been officially designated as the Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO) for the city. This development marks a key milestone for the city’s efforts in sustainable tourism management and paves the way for the advancement of the Sustainable Tourism Observatory.
This new initiative comes after the completion of the Tourism Carrying Capacity Study conducted by Develop Athens in 2024. The study serves as the foundation for the establishment of the Observatory, which aims to monitor and manage the rapid growth of tourism in Athens, ensuring the city remains both resilient and welcoming for both residents and visitors.
"The designation of Develop Athens S.A. as the official ‘Destination Management and Marketing Organization’ further strengthens the vital work we have been doing in the tourism sector," said Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Develop Athens S.A. "The establishment of the Sustainable Tourism Observatory under the DMMO umbrella enhances the city's strategic approach by promoting innovative and sustainable tourism policies. With the Tourism Carrying Capacity Study as our guide, we are committed to building an Athens that remains a friendly and resilient destination for both its residents and visitors," he added.
Strategic Planning for a Sustainable Tourism Destination
The Sustainable Tourism Observatory will serve as a central mechanism for collecting, analyzing, and leveraging data. The Observatory will track key indicators that contribute to the optimization of resource management and the implementation of sustainable policies within the tourism sector.
By employing cutting-edge scientific techniques, the Observatory seeks to develop a well-balanced tourism model that ensures the long-term sustainability of Athens as a destination while enhancing the quality of life for residents and the visitor experience.
International Recognition
The Observatory is currently in the process of being recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with plans for its further development already underway.
With the creation of the Sustainable Tourism Observatory, the municipal government reaffirms its commitment to a balanced, resilient, and sustainable tourism development approach that respects the needs of the city and its residents.
