GSTC completes assessment of Athens as a sustainable destination
Athens is changing! The city’s evaluation as a sustainable destination by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has finished with excellent results.
The City of Athens began Athens’ evaluation process through the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency in January 2021. The GSTC met with all stakeholders and made more than 111 visits in all areas of interest from neighbourhoods and parks, institutions and city services, to Museums and archeological sites.
The evaluation was presented at Athens City Hall in the presence of Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis. Athens scored an 86% excellent while ADDMA was praised for its role in managing and promoting the destination. In addition a number of ADDMA’s projects were singled out as particularly successful such as the destination’s tourism promotion before and during the pandemic, the Athens Film Office, and a series of public space interventions such as pocket parks.
The evaluation is only the beginning as ADDMA will immediately proceed to the next step - to the city's official certification as a sustainable destination.
